Buying a resale flat without getting married… yet!

If you’re looking to buy a resale flat in Singapore under the Fiancé/Fiancée Scheme, HDB stipulates that you must solemnise your marriage within 3 months after the resale completion.

Unfortunately for those who are keen to hold a wedding celebration, this means you either have to:

  1. Rush to complete both solemnisation and wedding celebration within 3 months
  2. Solemnise first and then hold a wedding celebration at a later date.

While Option 2 is more popular (and certainly more practical), there are some of us who are not keen on arranging 2 separate events (takes extra time & work), and also missing the chance to solemnise at their actual wedding celebration.

We heard through the grapevine that there’s a workaround, and it worked, allowing us to purchase our flat in March 2023, officially collect our keys in July 2023, and then solemnise our marriage in January 2024!

Here’s how:

Step 1: submit request on HDB website

Submit a request on HDB’s website to defer producing the marriage certificate. You’ll be asked to state the date of your impending marriage.

Step 2: provide proof of marriage intention

Provide proof that you have booked your wedding or solemnisation through receipts & invoices . The main point is that you’ll need to declare your intention to get married.

Step 3: receive email approval

You will receive an email notifying you that your deferment has been approved!

This usually takes a few days. We were lucky that ours was processed on the same day! However, as with government boards, it really depends on how many requests HDB receives.

tl;dr

Book your wedding celebration and bridal package before your resale purchase is complete! Then, you can submit the relevant invoices to HDB as proof that you have the intention to register your marriage. With these invoices, you can then proceed to request for a deferment.

Some friends hadn’t known about this, so they rushed to solemnise their marriage and book a wedding at the last minute. With that in mind, we hope this quick tip makes things easier. This is especially as we know that timing a marriage and house purchase together can be super stressful!
