Dyson V12 Detect Slim Review: is this light vacuum worth the money?

Now that Tofu E has grown into a very active toddler who enjoys running around the house with a snack, and our trusty old Bosch vacuum cleaner has run its course, we decided it was time to invest in a new vacuum.

Living with a toddler in a 4-room HDB flat means that cleaning is no longer about deep cleaning sessions. It’s about constant maintenance. Quick clean-ups. Five-minute vacuum runs between meals. Cleaning one room while your child is distracted by a toy. That is exactly where the Dyson V12 Detect Slim shines.

After using this almost daily for a while, we genuinely think it is one of the most practical cordless vacuums for a typical Singapore HDB household, particularly one with young children. It is not perfect (but of course!), and there are a few frustrations worth mentioning, but overall it feels like a vacuum that was designed for real-life family living rather than showroom demonstrations.

Our Quick Verdict

The Dyson V12 Detect Slim is probably one of the best cordless vacuum options if you prioritise convenience, lightweight handling, and frequent daily cleaning.

Its biggest strengths are its weight, manoeuvrability, laser dust detection, and ability to quickly handle the endless messes. The relatively small dustbin and premium price will not appeal to everyone, but for families cleaning multiple times a day, the convenience factor is difficult to overstate.

Pros

  • Extremely lightweight and easy to carry around the house
  • Excellent for cleaning vinyl and tiles
  • Laser reveals surprising amounts of dust
  • Easy for one-handed operation
  • Great for quick post-meal clean-ups
  • Works well on toddler snack debris, dust and hair
  • Compact enough for HDB storage spaces

Cons

  • Small dustbin fills quickly
  • Expensive compared to competitors
  • Battery drains significantly fast on Boost mode
  • Not the most powerful Dyson for carpet-heavy homes
  • Hair can occasionally get stuck when emptying the bin

Lightweight Design & Grip

Let’s face it: if a vacuum is difficult to take out, heavy to manoeuvre, or annoying to empty, you simply end up using it less.

At around 2.2kg, it feels noticeably lighter than larger Dyson models. Multiple reviewers have highlighted this as one of the V12’s biggest advantages over heavier models like the V15, and we did feel the difference compared to our old Bosch vacuum that weighed 3kg.

In practical terms, this means you can grab it with one hand, vacuum around a high chair, clean under a dining table, and put it away within minutes.

The Laser Feature Is Not a Gimmick!

It might not be obvious, but the laser cleaning head is easily one of the most satisfying features of the entire vacuum.

Singapore homes often have glossy tiles, vinyl flooring, or parquet-style surfaces. Under normal lighting, these floors can appear clean. In our case, our vinyl flooring makes it rather difficult to spot dirt and dust because of the grooves and wood rings.

Fortunately, the laser reveals fine dust, hair strands, snack crumbs, and particles that are practically invisible to the naked eye.

If you’re a parent of a very mobile baby or toddler, this feature feels particularly useful because it helps identify dust in areas where children spend most of their time. Trust us, you will love this when you start realising that your kid might eat something off the floor.

A Very Small Dustbin…?

The V12 uses a smaller bin compared to larger Dyson models. In fact, reviews frequently point this out as one of the vacuum’s biggest compromises.

For a 4-room HDB flat, we still find it pretty manageable. But if you are vacuuming the entire house after several days of accumulated mess, expect to empty the bin at least once.

We vacuum daily and this is what our bin looks like after just 1-2 days of vacuuming:

After just 1-2 days of vacuuming

We find it quite a pain to constantly have to empty the bin.

What About Hair?

The V12 performs well here overall. Compared to our old vacuum, we would say that the Dyson V12 Detect Slim works much better. It sucks up all the hairs on hard floors with minimal tangling.

Battery Life for a 4-Room HDB

Battery life is one area where expectations matter. Dyson advertises up to 60 minutes of runtime, though actual results depend heavily on power settings. I

It makes sense that higher power modes significantly reduce battery duration, but we did find ourselves having to charge once every 2-3 days, even while using Auto and Eco mode.

Is our house considerably dirtier with a toddler? Perhaps.

So, Is It Worth the Price?

This is the hardest question to answer because Dyson products are undeniably expensive.

To be fair, there are cheaper alternatives from brands like Shark, Dreame and Tineco that offer respectable performance. We have a Shark HydroVac Wet & Dry Cordless Vacuum that works pretty ok as a mop, but its dry vacuum capabilities are highly questionable. Hair is often not sucked up properly, which also explains why we used our Bosch vacuum in tandem.

On the other hand, the Dyson V12 Detect Slim has worked perfectly as a lightweight dry vacuum with a strong suction. Getting all the hairs, dust, and crumbs off the floor is fast and easy enough that we’re doing it daily – a feat for a family with a young toddler who needs a lot of supervision and attention.

We do have the mop attachment, but barely use it at the moment, so we’ll probably get around to reviewing it another time.

Final Thoughts

For a 4-room Singapore HDB flat with a toddler, the Dyson V12 Detect Slim feels remarkably well suited to everyday family life.

Its lightweight design makes it practical for frequent cleaning sessions. The laser feature genuinely improves visibility on hard flooring. It stores easily, handles common toddler messes effectively, and makes spontaneous clean-ups feel far less tedious.

Of course, the Dyson V12 Detect Slim still has its share of imperfections, but we find that the pros still outweight the cons. Definitely worth the investment!
